The crossword puzzle actually began as a real crossword puzzle – invented by American psychiatrist and linguist W.B. Sewer. According to his writings, he had tried and failed to create a crossword puzzle that would solve with the keyword “hippie” but was still frustrated with the difficulty level of finding correct words. At this time, he decided to take his frustration and use it to start a new hobby. He began to buy several packs of paper and to paste the correct words into a puzzle that he made out of glue and paper. The rest, as they say, is history!
